Serena Williams - Black History Month Notable Figure Spotlight

Today we recognize Serena Williams as part of our Black History Month Notable Figure Spotlight celebration. “Serena Williams revolutionized women’s tennis with her powerful style of play and won more Grand Slam titles (39) than any other woman or man during the open era. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, but was raised in Los Angeles, where she learned tennis from her father on public courts. She turned professional in 1995, when she was 14 years old, only one year after her older sister, Venus.”

Serena has also entered the philanthropy field, founding multiple schools in Africa and becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. To learn about Serena’s current endeavors in tennis, fashion, advocacy and philanthropy, visit
