Bessie Coleman - Black History Month Notable Figure Spotlight
Today we recognize the first female African American and Native American pilot, Bessie Coleman as part of our Black History Month Notable Figure Spotlight celebration.
“Bessie was born in Atlanta, Texas, where the treatment and repression of Black Americans was especially harsh. When she decided she wanted to learn to fly, the discrimination she faced based on race and gender meant that she would have to travel to France to realize her dreams. Coleman was the only student of color in her class, but within seven months she achieved her goal. She was taught in a 27-foot biplane that was known to fail frequently, sometimes in the air.” ~PBS.org
Bessie is a terrific role model who shows that you should always follow your heart, despite any obstacles that may block your way.
