Gateway Longview’s Preventive Services are designed to maintain family unity, minimize risk of out-of-home placement, enhance safety, and hasten family reunification.
Our Traditional Preventive Services assist children who are at-risk of being removed from their homes due to educational, community issues, or challenges in the home. The program provides supportive and rehabilitative services to children and their families for the purposes of
• averting disruption of a family which will or could result in placement of a child in foster care,
• enabling a child who has been placed in foster care to return to his/her family at an earlier time that would otherwise be possible, or
• reducing the likelihood that a child who has been discharged from foster care would return to such care.
Our program is designed to preserve the health and safety of all family members as well as affirm the importance of family bonds and connections. This is achieved by providing support, education, advocacy, clinical case management, and/or crisis intervention services. Millions of children across the country are being brought up in households headed by their grandparents or other relatives. The primary goal of KinCARES is to reinforce the family’s ability to function effectively and independently to avert family breakup and to hasten reunification as soon as possible, in the event that breakup is necessary. Trained caseworkers work with families on goal setting and attainment so that the risk of out-of-kin placement is greatly reduced. The main focus is to give children permanency, not placement, by reunifying the child with his or her parents, by staying in the custody or guardianship of the relative on a long-term basis, or by terminating the parents’ rights so that the child may be adopted by the relative. When reunification is the goal, KinCARES will foster a successful return home by bridging the gaps that can often surface for the kinship relative and the birth parent. Our Intensive Preventive Services provide a multitude of therapeutic interventions for families residing within Erie County who evidence multiple complex problems. The program serves families where one or more children are in imminent danger of being placed in out-of-home care and/or families whose reunification can be hastened by assisting families where children are being returned from out-of-home care. At least one family member, but preferably all, must be willing to work with their therapist for a minimum of four weeks. The program is modeled after the HOMEBUILDERS ® nationally recommended best practice program. The caseworkers are in the home 6 days per week and the family receives a phone call on the 7th day.
